Root Canal Therapy

When decay reaches the nerve, a root canal saves the tooth. Modern technique makes it far gentler than its reputation — with sedation available if you prefer.

About the service

What to expect

When a tooth becomes infected or badly decayed, the pulp — the soft tissue inside — can become inflamed and painful. Root canal therapy removes that infected tissue, relieves your discomfort, and seals the tooth so it can keep functioning normally for years to come. The alternative — extraction — creates a gap that affects your bite, your adjacent teeth, and often your confidence. Preserving your natural tooth is almost always the better outcome, and root canal therapy is how we get there.

Comfort is part of the plan

At Birdwell & Mutlak, we approach every root canal with two priorities: your comfort and a clean, lasting result. We offer nitrous oxide sedation for patients who want a more relaxed experience, and we move at a pace that works for you.

Honest answers to common concerns

Is a root canal painful?

The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia — you'll be numb throughout. Most patients describe the experience as pressure and sensation, not pain. The discomfort that brought you in is typically far worse than the treatment that resolves it.

How long does it take?

Most root canals are completed in a single appointment lasting 60 to 90 minutes. After treatment, we typically recommend placing a crown over the tooth to protect it long-term — that's a separate appointment scheduled once you've healed.

Can I use nitrous oxide for my root canal?

Yes. Nitrous oxide is available for any procedure at our practice, including root canal therapy. It takes effect quickly, keeps you relaxed throughout, and wears off fast enough that most patients can drive themselves home.

If you're in pain, we're here.
